I read the thread, good looking build, so you just register and insure it as the Beetle? Do you have to get it appraised?

That would be the way to do it, register it as a beetle.

What if you were to get pulled over and have an inspection done and the registration saws Beetle and 1600cc or whatever?

When you register a car, at least here in TX from my experience, it's the year, make, model, VIN and plate numbers that go into the system. So you've got a "bug", whatever year body / beetle you're using, registered as your vehicle. They're not even going to bother with seeing if your car passes emissions cause after 25 years it doesn't have to, but all your signals, wipers and what not must work, good tread on tires, that sort of thing (that varies from state to state). Depending on whom does you sticker, it may or may not have anything written on the back of your sticker, but in the case that they do it right it will. That info will read 19?? VW Beetle, your VIN#, etc. I doubt you'll have a problem with what engine is in your car, unless it was a new model body and had to pass emissions. I'm sure if a cop pulls you over, let's say for speeding, I'm sure he's will probably be like "you've got a V8 in that thing, let me see"!
If all else fails, register it as a custom / homebuilt car in which you'll have to provide receipts for all the parts you've bought to build your car.
Correct me if I'm wrong guys.

I used to know a guy who was building a Chevette with a 400 SBC(!!) up here in Ontario(don't ask me where it got to,the guy ran outa money with about a month left of work to it and sold to somebody who I think parted it out),anyways,he bought another Chevette and put it on the road legally just to avoid this issue..this Chevette also wound up being cut-up for the fenders and quarter panels for the SBC car...it was a wild looking thing..and was too bad he never got it done..

Yeah well Id plan on getting my boss to do my safety, and no e--test after 20 years here, Id just be worried about when the insurance company requests an appraisal because its older than 1991

Cool! What gauge did you go with after all? How much sheet metal did you get and how much was the cost of the materials?

i need rear suspension, any suggestions? i was thinking coil overs, but thats expensive, so then i was thinking just some coils and shocks, what do you guys think? I came across these and thought I'd share it with you. This is how this guy did his rear suspension. I'm thinking maybe some rear coils from a light weight car would work.
