I have driven older trucks(and even some newer car) and i know they are loud. the dynamat in my super beetle cuts down a lot of noise. I still need the rest of the interior in the car before i say the car is loud. the thing is, if i were to build one of these i wouldn't want to be uncomfortable while driving the car. I have nothing wrong with loud engines, i love muscle cars(and hate tuners) but sitting in a car that has a lot of engine noise can be extremely uncomfortable. My plan would be to use the car as a daily driver in the summer or maybe winter(if i drove the car in winter i think i would try to retain the 4x4 that came in some of the s-10 blazer). Something to whip around town in and roast the hell out of any honda on the road. Anyway, i think a v8 bug will be my next project. also the s-10 parts are a very good idea, you can find the parts anywhere. i will have to see how all of the projects on here turn out to see if i really want to do it. However, i am pretty sure i will start one, come next winter when i have nothing to work on.

im not so sure about beating any honda but it will be alot cooler. cuz i know of some tuners that will completely destroy any v8 so far not saying that a v8 bug cant beat them.

Around here(rockford, illinois), all i see are pos hondas. The guys that drive them think they are the nuts because there engine sounds like a weedwacker, half of them have body parts/kits falling off. Not saying that i would have to roast them(and yes like you said hellraiser, it would be a lot cooler), but when you car is beat by a vw bug, you have to feel bad. anyway, i think i might try to build the mid engine setup, you can buy the designs from rorty designs.com for about 100 dollars, i would like to give this one a try. However there is still that large problem of sound in the passenger compartment. Instead of having maybe a foot or so between you and the engine when the engine sits in the front of the car, you sit right in front of the engine with the rorty designed one. Anyway, my project is a long ways away, just throwing out ideas. Hope to see more progress pics v8superbeetle

I'm sure with the dynamat and a mild to stock muffler you could cut down the noise considerably.
The are some fast ricers out there, but they have a but load of money thrown into them and they usually get rid of everything in the car that's not usable. I'm sure a V8 bug will give them a run for their money depending on your setup cause there are some fast bugs that run off of the original flat 4 engine. I remember seeing a video of a flat 4 bug beat a V8 bug.

there are definitely people out there that have the resources and the money to build a flat four up to beat just about anything. but when you tell people you have a v8 in your bug, i think some people will freak out. So, i guess i could spend the money on just building a badass flat four but i don't really think this would be as fun as having a v8.

if u look arround you can build up a quick flat 4 pretty cheap and ya alot of the fast ricers have alot of money in them lol. but nothing beats the sound of an american muscle v8

The problem is is when you mix the words cheap and motor you normally don't have reliable. there is a guy on thesamba.com that always post Fast, Cheap, Reliable, you have to pick two you can't have all three. So yes you can make a flat 4 cheap and fast but probably not that reliable. And i totally agree with you, the sound of a vw engine compared to a v8 just ins't comparable. the v8 has the sound over a flat 4. Any progress v8superbeetle.

I agree, the sound of the V8 is much better. The sound of ricers, even ricer burners is kinda annoying. The sound of their engines, from inside the car, with a cold air intake is kinda cool, but the exhaust just, No..... a V8 and the exhaust, Nice......... I did get some stuff done as far as striping the car completely down to the shell, but nothing that had to do with mocking up the frame or motor work. I was able to finally completely break down my car to the shell. So I pretty much removed all the door windows, old door seals, the kick panels / protection in the door jams and along the heater channels, I finally figured out how to remove the dash, I removed the foam and whatnot from the back of the car sheet metal inside and in the engine compartment, I removed the rear view mirror, I removed those handles that help you in and out of the back seat, I completely got rid of all the old wiring that ran through the body and I did a little body work as well. Oh, not to mention I cleaned up my garage cause it was really messy. Now that I've got all that out of the way I'll mock up the frame out of wood. That and it just feels better to work in clean area. I'll post some pics tonight. That's the cool thing about a GM V8, you can get all three really (cheap, fast, reliable).

I remember when "The Fast and The Furious" came out there was a really big boom in street racing, but with imports and 4 cylinder cars. I had a 2001 Dodge Neon at the time and I did every performance bolt on imaginable to it, cold air intake, header, aluminum pulleys, cam gear w/ dyno tuning, Eibach suspension springs, MSD ignition, cat back exhaust, 17" wheels, stage 2 clutch, etc. I took it down to the track after all that to see what it could do......it ran a 16.8, best run on street tires, LOL! I did beat a stock full size V8 chebby pickup truck. ;P I must have poured, easily, $4000 into that car. I raced my buddy whom had a Honda Civic with all the same modifications, but I raced him when my car was new / stock without any modifications and I smoked him like a pack of GPC's, LOL. He really didn't know how to drive stick very well cause I'm he could've beat me.
So, it takes a good amount of money to make those cars fast. Sure I could've put like a 25 shot of NOS on my car and gotten maybe another second off of my 1/4 mile time, or I could've spent another 3-4 K on a turbo charger and gotten maybe high 14's but afterwards I felt like............."What a waste of money"!!!! Only real gain or good I could see out of all that work was my MPG went from 32 to about 35.

Just to clear things up. I think many posts ago I said the super beetle has a 3" longer wheelbase. Well, come to find out that's not true. Whatever source I got that from was wrong. I actually measured the wheelbase and also Wikipedia has the correct info, but the wheelbase of the super beetle (1303, which what mine is) is only 3/4" longer. So the total wheelbase is 95.25". Just a heads up!

I started the mock up the chassis out of 2x3 lumber. I've got one side finished so the other side should be a breeze as well as crossmembers. I'll post pics soon.
