Cool bug! I like how the exhaust is setup! That's cool you were able to build it from a lot of free parts! Where are you located?

Thanks man, it took two weeks to make the exhaust pipes. I'm in gray, Ga.(10 miles north of macon.)

They kinda look like horns. Maybe the bug from hell could use a set like those.

I used leaf springs from a 69 f-100, mounted them in a location that the s-10 axle would mount on with s-10 shackels and put monroe gas charged coil-over shocks on it.It's only a 7.5" ring gear but so far it's held up, I also welded the spiders together for a posi unit because summit didn't have a spool for a 28 spline axle with a 7.5"gear, go figure.

Well, I had a total disaster, went to the track, burned up the clutches in first, broke third, fan switch broke and over heated the engine (260 degrees!!) blew out my radiator. My car weighed in at 2890 lbs!! I wish I had found this sight a long time ago so I would have had a better idea of what to start with. v8superbeetle you r build would have been soooo much easier for me to do, and from what I saw in your pics, you did a great job!! I'm in the process of cutting my car apart so I can use my s-10 frame (I almost did that to begin with but thougt it was to heavy) I've spent three years on this build and it was a complete waste because i've got to start all over again. Word of advice to all of you out there that are thinking of these kinds of projects- DO YOUR HOMEWORK- DON'T USE PARTS THAT YOU'RE NOT SURE ARE GOOD- ASK OTHER PEOPLE FOR ADVICE-, AND THE ONLY STUPID QUESTION IS THE ONE YOU DON'T ASK!!! I'm still going to re-build my drag bug, i've had this car for 9 years so i'm not giving up on it,i'm gonna make a 10 second car out of it if it kills me! I'll keep you posted on progress and i'm taking lots of pics this time around. I do want to thank everybody on this sight for the info and pics for me to get a better idea of what to do in the future. c-ya.

Dang, sorry to hear that! Yeah, this site definitely has different ways of approaching a V8 bug build. The way hellraiser and I went using a S-10 chassis made it simpler getting the frame under the car but you have to cut a lot more of the body away! Cool man! Way to stick with it. I can't wait to see what you come up with.

ya with the way we did it, u lose alot of the body, i think the best way would be to build a chassis, but its more money and work.

To be Honest the Best way to go is to start with a New Chassis. I used 2x3 Box tube chassis and it went great with my project. If you have the tools and knowhow of what to do when building your car, id go with a 2x3 tube chassis. Check out the pics I have on here. Im Running a narrowed Mustang II Front Suspension with a narrowed 9" Ford rear end. I also tucked the 29x18.50x15 Mickey Thompsons up under the stock width fenders in the rear with about a 1 1/2 between the outside of the tire and the fender and a 1 1/2 between the outside of the tire and the frame and I was still left with enough room in the back for a 12 gallon Custom aluminum fuel cell mounted vertical in the back between my frame rails, I see alot of people trying to run the radiators in the back of the car but I dont know why, maybe its the way I built my car IDK but I had enough froom in the front of my car to mount the radiator leaned back like a Corvette is. Good Luck with the rebuild of your car man. Hope it works out for you. Take a Look at my pictures and see if you can get some ideas. TTYL

If you have the budget I'd suggest a full tube chassis. If you're building on a budget, the S-10 or similar chassis will work.

It was the first time on the track and with all the problems I had I didn't get a good lanch so my time wasn't recorded. It barely got off the line, by the time Igot in second gear the race was over,Ineeded a test & tune day , not competition. I'm rebuilding the trans, and found a 9" rear, just have to cut it and put a 4.88 gear in it.My engine sits farther forward than the pics of ya'lls , how did you guys get your distributer in did you do it before the engine install? If I do a re-build on the chassis I"m gonna have to start from scratch whitch means cutting the body away from the frame I built, I pretty much would have to build the entire car over again. How much does your car weigh? do you have a cage? how much HP are you big block guys running? are you running stall converters? MSD ignition? NOS ?I'm just trying to look at all options before 86'n what I've done.I'm really serious about making this thing work. I'm a 20 year experienced fabricator/ welder so the skill issue is no problem, I'm not worried about cost because I've been doing it a little at a time when money allows (trying to raise two kids)!!! I just want it to be strong, fast, and fun. My wife is very supportive of what I'm doing a enjoys watching me work on it ( it keeps me at home) but she's worried about me getting hurt. Anyway I'm still gathering the main parts I need to make it work right but I still need to figure out which direction Ineed to go as far as sarting over or making what i've got work.
