I made a place for the gas tank to mount. I'll be using the stock tank and looks like it'll work out great. Here's where the tank will sit. I mounted it at an incline just like how it came from the factory. Is it a coincidence that the tank bends match up with the luggage shelf?........ And is it a coincidence that the bottom of the tank is concave underneath almost like it was meant to be a front engine V8 conversion (it's hard to see in the photo but the bottom of the tank almost wraps around the rear differential)? I think not!!!!

I welded on four body mount tabs to the gas tank frame. I then welded in two cross members to make the tank / body mounts frame more rigid. Seems like a good idea and it'll hold the rear of the body down tighter. The tabs / body mounts are basically just pieces of angle iron. Here's a shot of the four of them. Here's how the body sits now. Once I weld up some shackle mounts it should lift the frame and body up 1-2 inches. Today I went and got some more stuff to rebuild my chassis, tie rods, brake pads, brake hoses, sway away bushings. I think I'm just lacking a couple bushings for where the shackles will mount to the frame. Next I'll modify the original front fender mounts so that way they'll support the weight of the front of the body. Then I'll cut away a little more of the body around the suspension arms for clearance.

There's never really heavy traffic here but it did pick up hear lately.
These past couple of weekends I haven't had much free time to work on the bug having back to back gigs the previous weekend and my engagement party this weekend.
I have bought some 1/16 6013 welding rods and 22 gauge sheet metal so I can widen my rear fenders 3". I might widen the front fenders an inch too. I also got some auto bondo, primer and paint for the body as well as the chassis. Last but not least, bought some new grade 8 bolts and washers for the body mounts.
I've welded the shackle mounts, made of 2x3 sqaure tubing today. I have to drill holes for the shackle bushings but I'm not sure what I'll use or how to make the hole that big since I only have drill bits that'll fit a hand held drill. Once I get that done then I can center the body and drill the body mounts for its permanent location. Then I'll began widening the fenders. After that I'll find a donor car to use the flooring out of, finish the body work, and then I'll break everything down and paint it. In the mean time I'm saving to get the remaining parts to get my project going.

Hey V8superbeetle, it is Texasbuggys here! Project is looking great! Hey what side of H-Town you on? I will be coming up to drop off some parts towards the end of May and may try to give you a call and check out your project. I am thinking about building me an vw-10 as yours is coming along pretty nicely although mine is a 67 and a little narrower in the hood area. Have you figured out how you will title it? As the Bug, S-10 or assembled title?

if you can find a store that deals with tools exclusively, you might be able to find drill bits that have a smaller shank(the part that goes into the chuck of the drill)to fit your drill...for instance,if you can find a Snap-on Tools distributor in your area ,he should have these drills..when you do drill out the holes,be sure to keep the drill lubricated with a little bit of oil on the end of it as you're drilling, that way,it will be easier to punch the hole..

Email me cause I check it very often and I'll see if we can work something out for you to come see my project. matt@mikeydesigns.com Let me know when you're coming by H-Town.

Good advice, thanks! I'm going to check with our machinist here at work to see if he has anything I could borrow.

wow its realy coming along isnt it, great job It is! I got a little side tracked these past couple of weekends having two gigs and then our engagement party. Families met for the first time. Nerve racking, but all went well. Any who, last weekend my old man was telling me that "I need a good set of heads". So I've been racking my brain trying to figure out the best setup for my 283. I've gotten a lot of good suggestions from hotrodders.com and have came to this conclusion. 1) The intake I have is too much for my 283. I've been schooled on CFM and motor displacement. So now I have a much better understanding of what parts to get for my motor. 2) I've been looking into heads and found that this is the best setup for my budget, a guy with a dyon computing program put this together for me. "Alright Check this out,
Vortec heads at 10:1 compression Performer intake with 650 (or 600 for better low end) CFM Carb Lunati Voodoo 60103LK Cam Headers with free flowing exhaust.
Peak Torque 370@4500 rpm Pek Horsepower 373@6000 rpm"So I'm in the process of getting ready to return the gasket kit and intake I bought to exchange it for a vortec performer intake. I'm also shopping around for some vortec heads. They're really cheap, $500 for a new set of heads, used they run $150-200. Only problem is I have to install some stiffer spring to accomedate for the .480/.502 lift of my cam. Stock vortec heads will only handle a .450 lift. Also, some machine work has to be done to upgrade the springs. Still I should be able to get a nice set of heads with work done for $400-700, new or used. So at this point I'm gonna finish up my shackle mounts, widen the fenders, finish body work so I can rebuild paint my chassis, and last but not least I've got to finish my motor and tranny so I can see if I need to raise the body any. If I have to I'll just add some shims to lift it. Once the motor / tranny is in I can then fabricate the floor / firewall. Lots more to come and to do!

you sure that you want to go with 10:1 compression? seems just a HAIR on the high side, but you shouldnt have a problem bleeding off some of it with cam . i know that im gonna need to run premium on the 9.5 that i put together, and hooope that it dont ping. eh itll be fine.
you should be able to fab up most of the floor, and just wait on the tunnel. wow youre moving right along

The motor has 11:1 pop up pistons. And the motor is bored over .030 which bring the cylinders to 3.91. I'm thinking about just replacing the pistons with flat or dish tops so it'll bring down the compression to 8.5 - 9:1 so I can use 87 pump gas. That and I'm finding out that the pop up pistons are limiting my head choice and I'd really like to go with the vortec setup.

ANYHOW thats something to look into. i was just thinking of looking for a trans tunnel that was deep, more than anything else, figuring that i could widen it at the top if need be. the floor of mine is probly going to be an afterthought with more emphasis on ride height and parts clearance. ill burn that bridge when i get to it. -chris
