i have never heard of boring an engine .125 over i dont think there is enough cyl. wall there to do that, but the guy that does that can tell you i think it would be cheaper to rebuild a 302 (4.00"x3.00") or 327 (4.00"x3.25")

It can be bored to 4.00" (over .125). It has to be sonic tested though to make sure the block is good for that much of a bore. From what I understand is the older blocks are better suited for this. I'm not sure what year mine is. Guess that's the next thing to look up. I like the idea of using the 327 and installing the 283 crank to get a 302 ci but I'd still have to get the motor balanced. Also I'd have find a 327 block. I was told I'm looking at spending quite a bit of money to get all that done cause I'd have to get the crank balanced for different pistons cause it's been balanced for the pistons that are in it. Unless I can find pistons that way the same. I'm at least thinking of tearing it down, cleaning up the pistons, installing new bearings, hot tanking the block and honing the bores. So I'll have a fresh build to install my new parts on.

If you have the block bored you're gonna have to get new slugs anyway so you'll have to have them balanced again, but the rods have 2 b balanced as well, should have your crank ground as well and don't forget to deck the block.

certain years can be machined to .125 over. (the guys over at hotrodders can tell you for sure ) i put a 302 together recently for my bug....... still havent fired it yet. the pistons had to be special ordered. my pistons( forged with floating pins, and set for a cr of 9.5:1) cost me a little over $850 from je. i would take it in, get it looked at to see if a rering is all that you need, and while i was there take everything in (balancer, rods pistons rings pulleys, flywheel, pressure plate, everything in the crank rotating assembly) and get it all balanced. getting it balanced correctly is the best money you will spend.

After considering and getting lots of advice I've decided this. Being this is a budget build I'm thinking about just getting theses Keith Black flat top pistons. After plugging all numbers into a CR calculator the CR comes out to 8.624:1 which will be great for pump gas! I should have an honest 300hp with my setup. Might throw in a NOS system to get some extra hp when needed. Maybe a 100hp shot? I would think the motor could handle 400hp, right? It should be great on gas and fun to drive with a higher gear.

hey v8 superbeetle , dawg here had to re-login new name is mock1racer.Before you decide to spray your engine better get forged pistons or you'll fry them as soon as you hit the juice. Also make sure your rods are strong enough to hold the extra power. Will be posting new pics next week, rebuilt the top of my motor, 480 lift cam with a 265 duration, 305 heads,2.02 intakes, 1.60 exhaust ,roller rockers and a new 750 Holley, also scored a 250HP NOS kit. That pretty much blew my buget for this month, trans is gonna cost about a grand, torque converter is $500 and it;s gonna cost me about $800 to build a bulletproof 9" rear end. So i'm gonna go back and strip the car get it painted, re-do the electrical system (i've got no fuse panel, a good idea to have one of those!!) I"m thinking painting it camo and put the rebel flag on top , "01" on the door and call it "Private Beetle" after Beetle Bailey. What do ya think?

Thanks for the heads up! I've been looking into what to beef up for NOS and thats what I found. Need forged pistons and rods. I'm just considering my options at this point. Whether to just freshen up the motor and keep the current pistons or to get new pistons that'll lower my compression ratio so I have a better chance of using pump gas. I'm wanting to have about 400 hp, that would make me happy. I've been messing around with a program called Engine Analyzer Pro v3.5 (found here www.performancetrends.com/) to pull some numbers with different parts and CR combinations. I'm not sure what cam is in it now and I need lifters. So I'm just going to buy a lifter / cam kit cause lifters by themselves are just as expensive as stand alone lifters. I'm thinking about going with Edelbrock cam #2102 which has a .420/.442 lift, duration 278/288. I can't go over a .450 lift with the stock vortec springs. With a 8.5:1 compression the 283 (292, on 93 octane) would be right at 350hp @ 6,500 rpm and the power band doesn't drop off until about 8,000 rpm (these numbers are with the 2102 cam specs). With the current pistons the motor would have about 11.5:1 cr producing right at 400 hp @ 6,600 but the low end numbers suffered. I like the idea of being able to use pump gas but I like the numbers of the current pistons. Yet dislike the fact I'll more than likely have to use racing gas. So I've been scratching my head this whole week about what to do. Cool! Sounds like a good plan to me. Keep us updated!

To be streetable you definatly want a lower compression, as light as your car is I would'nt be worried about losing power, And you don't want to pay for racing fuel, $9.50 a gal!!! That's what it is here in Ga. I only get 5 gal at a time but it's still expensive as hell!!! A 350 hp engine is pretty good but also consider a high performance motor does'nt last very long, so if you plan on having it a while, build it to last. A 420 lift is'nt too radical, it would give it a nice little rumble, you wight want to look at a roller cam and roller rocker option, it may be a little more on your wallet but in the long run it will last forever.8.5:1 compression would be the way I would go for a street machine and later down the road you could always install a vortec supercharger. I'm running 11.5:1 compression with racing fuel and will be using a 250 shot so I'm allready over 700 hp. But i've had to make major changes and I can't drive it on the street, kinda sux though cause I really want too. I'm outta here for the weekend ( I do this online stuff @ work cuz i'm bored) so I'll c-ya !! DAWG

My goal is to make it a street car yet the cost to purchase new pistons, plus machine work and balancing is a good chunk of $$$. High performance engines wear quicker, true. This ride for me will be a weekend street car. If I'm only able to take it to the track that wont be much fun cause that wont happen often. I wanna blow the doors of some ricers! LOL! I do the same, post at work and on the weekend you really wont hear from me. Some times got too much time on my hands at work. Too much time to think about it all. That can be good and bad. Have a good weekend!

Oh yeah, I'm still managing some time for body work on the bug. I haven't seen my car with a hood in a while. This is a shot right before I got the motor this past weekend.

Hey Matt, are you still thinking about running your radiator in the back of your car? I didn't know what your final decision was... I am coming to Houston on Tuesday. I will be in a training class on Wednesday and Thursday. I could drop my old radiator off to you if you are still interested in using it.
Let me know and I'll throw it in my truck for the trip,
Ray

I'd really appreciate that cause it would help a lot. I'll email you my number and we can take it from there.
