Hello everyone, as some of you guys know I’m building a v8 powered convertible beetle, and well I accidentally bought another beetle this weekend….. LOL
Last week I seen an add on the local craigslist for some VW parts, the guys said he had some sheet metal, engine parts, and a “terminally” rusted 66 beetle body and some other various parts for $300. I offered him $250 and figured that I might be able to use some of the parts and maybe cut off parts of the body to widen our beetle, or maybe use the front end of the body for ours??? I figured that I’d easily be able to sell what I didn’t want and make my money back.
So the wife and I get to the guys house and he had all the stuff in a barn. He pulled a lot of the parts out and was showing me all the stuff he had. Then he took me in the barn and it wasn’t just a rusted body, it was an entire beetle, and it was in about 10x better shape than our 69 vert. was. So here I am thinking that my wife is going to be pissed off that I’m buying another beetle and I’m thinking if I’ll be able to sell it on ebay or part it out or???
Then I turn around and she had a big grin on her face….. She liked the beetle and wants to keep it for another project…… LOL
We got everything loaded up and we ended up getting the beetle, the engine was pulled and interior stripped, and the engine is now locked up. We also got a 40hp case and various parts, 3 or 4 28 and 30 pict solex carbs, a couple gen or alt stands, 2 spare hoods for the 66, some surface rust, but ok, and 2 spare VW emblems that are in real good shape, 2 extra sets of doors, 2 have some rust through on the bottom the other 2 are in pretty good shape, the trunk lid off of the car plus a spare, both in perfect shape, a spare apron/wheel well area cut off of another car, 2 spare sets of glass one with pop out windows, some wheels and hub caps, some trim, a couple gas tanks, some rough front bumpers, some engine tins, and lots of other odds and ends I can’t think of off of the top of my head. And all of this for $250
Right now I’m not sure exactly what we’ll do with the 66 hard top beetle??? Maybe another V8 powered beetle on an s-10 chassis??? My wife says she’d like to drive it as her daily driver, but doesn’t want a “stock” bug. She said she would kind of like to just have a v6 in it. So we’ve been kicking around a few ideas:
Put the body on an s10 chassis and just use the 4.6l vortec V6 from the truck to power it, or just through another V8 in it because she’ll get addicted to the power of the V8 in our vert… LOL
Build a 4x4 v8 bug on an s10 chassis…. That way we could drive the v8 powered vert in the summer and the 4x4 hardtop in the winter… LOL
A major thought has been a super light fwd v6 powered beetle??? I’m thinking of just pulling the body off and making it a unibody structure using carbon fiber and Kevlar composite for the floor and unibody structure. I could get a v6 fwd car for an engine donor and pull out the whole front end sub frame and bolt it to my custom VW unibody. Then maybe use the rear suspension from the donor car??? I don’t know what we might use for a donor car, but maybe something like a super charged 3800 bonneville??? I don’t know how heavy the engine is or how much HP it has or what other options I have…. Just a thought, but we are kind of leaning this way right now……
If anyone has any ideas or thoughts feel free to chime in.
Well here are a few pictures of what we got………. Enjoy………
This was everything we got, a truck load plus the beetle
This is the truck load of parts minus the 1500 engine
the beetle has some spots rusted through on the lower part of the body and also the heater channels, but most of the car still is there, especially compared to our 69 vert.
We got a spare headlight ring and lense to replace that broken one.
The car sat in the guys barn on concrete for about 15 years.
The passenger side was in worse shape than the drivers side. The lower hinge and part of the pillar are rusted through, but at least the car isn’t rusted in half like our vert LOL
The car also came with this cool custom steering wheel….. LOL
Oh yeah we also have another font axle inside the car…
That’s all I have for now……….
Talk to you all later
