Well, I finally paid off the transmission that I had on layaway forever. Liberty's said that it should be done within the next week. Now I'll be able to map out the rest of my trans/driveshaft tunnel and floor. I also ordered the rollcage. It's from S&W. I got it in DOM. The S&W rep told me that since NHRA specifies .118" wall thickness (S&W's cage is .120"), that I would need to go with .134" EWS. This is because if NHRA checks wall thickness at a bend, the tubing is likely to be thinner than .118" at a bend. This applies to cars that run 9.90 or faster. WELL, SCCA requires their rollcages to be made with seamless tubing. That rules out EWS for SCCA, and I seriously doubt that I'll be hitting 9.90's, so I went with DOM.

That's great news. The DOM should be plenty. That's the same cage I got. It's a nice piece. It takes a lot of motor, sticky tires, and suspension work to get a car into the 9.90's. $$$

To put your car in the 9's you'll need about 800 HP, about a 4000-5000 stall, trans brake, either a ladder bar or serious 4-link setup, and some soft sticky slicks. This is not even talking about the trans itself. The input shaft will be the first thing to fail. The valve body also needs to beefed up for more pressure on the torque converter. Everything in the internals really needs to be chromoly and roller type bearings on every surface. A trans built for that kind of abuse is not cheap, I have $1200 in mine and it's only good for about 650HP. Also the trans yoke needs to be chromoly as well as the input shaft.

I wouldn't even aim for the 9.90 mark. I just want a car with respectable 1/4mi. times for street driving, along with some handling abilities and enough guts to maintain at highway speed.
The trans is a Tremec T56magnum. It's a 6spd manual trans. My last few cars I built were automatics, and I prefer them for dragracing, but I wanted this car to be "sportscar"-like.
My Model A was an 11 sec. car, and the 3rd Malibu was high 12's. I gotta say that even high 12 seconds, out of a street driven car, is pretty darn quick. Most of the clowns that'll tell ya that "anything slower than 9's is too slow" are just that... clowns. Most of those folks don't even have anything quick, they just like to talk.
To (mis)quote one of the editors of Car Craft, "I'd rather settle for mediocrity in many areas, rather than expertise in only one". Yeah, I want darn good acceleration, but not a dedicated drag car, pretty d**n fast top end, but not a strictly salt flat car, and I wanna handle kinda like a slotcar, but don't want a roadcourse-only trailercar. I'm building a tiny, round Corvette!

12 seconds is pretty fast. There's not a lot of people that have reached 9's. They gotta have some deep pockets. I would be happy if my bug ran flat 12's. I can easily pick out the "Clowns" from legit people. Some teen, must have been 16-17, saw my bug this weekend and was talking about how he beat a Mustang in his Mom's minivan. Haha. I told him I had to go check on my dog, which I really did, to keep the ranting from going.

I would like to get close to a ten sec car but until I get a good stall converter and some slicks I wont see it. I would have to spray it with about 250 Hp or do a two stage and have a fogger setup with a bar under the carb. But that means different intake, plumbing, second tank, the NOS kit itself. I'm not ready for all that yet, I've got my hands full just makin what I got work right. But one day...
