I started this project in 1987, at the shop I used for my business. I've worked on VWs since '60 and opened my own business in the early '70s, after putting quite a few years of VW Factory School under my belt.
The project semed to always end up on hold. EVERY time I'd start on it, business would get too busy to work on it. Finally, I threw up a quick shed over it an put a "WIP" sign on the door ( Wait in Peace ). Still have it and it cranked and shifted out .... 3 summers ago. 302 automatic. Maybe it's because I was weaned on and raced Chevies for so long.
Anyway, when I told my grandson about the '61 that we put a 327 in for a Major at Ft. Hood, TX, in '46, he went ballistic to do that with a '61 I've had for years. Then, I had access to any and all metal working equipment that was on the base. Here, I've got a stick, mig and tig outfit with an oxy/act outfit. Of course all the saws, grinders and other assorted shop tools. I just don't want to get into building up a frame. Maybe cut up a rolling chassis and work with that. Though my heart wants to regress to the nice thump, thump of the '50s and '60s ... I think a decent 327 or 350 would be sufficient to "tighten up" some of the local college dudes with the showroom hotties.
I'll keep check and see what chassis ideas drop in.
2 suggestions about the program:
1. Drop the second "e" on "Memeber"....Member
2. Pay visit to www.thesamba.com and see about a quasi-advertisement. It would definitely benefit this program and what you offer would also help them. There is always a V8VW on their ad section and they are strong world wide. You might also check with "pro street bugs" and see what they say. I would think that this would be a perfect place for a "Kit Sale" AND you might could get a small percentage from same and it would definitely help you with the site.
After you check this, feel free to Cut & Paste this part or Delete it from the post.
By the way, I have on file the past information on your bad bug! Very "comforting" material for a restorer of V8 powered Bugs. I wish you all the best with this site AND with the car!!
