so just last weekend i got my brothers 1984 ford f250 6.9L IDI Diesel with a aftermarket ATS turbo pulling 11lbs of boots with the aftermarket overdrive kit of some sort.
the story on the truck. ok i had a 1968 vw sand rail when i was 15. worked I disagree off all summer and saved up my construction pay to buy it for $1500 running with a title. fixed her up, sand it all down, painted it and even made it street legal with registration and tags and all. fixed it, broke it, fixed it... anyways got it running good for a solid week and took it to school and such and the mother ordered it to be sold. to short i ended up trading it for a 1995 jeep cherokee 4in lift and 31in tires... sold that off and wanted a sport bike and again mom said no, so i got a cr500 dirt bike and this truck for my brother.... blew up the dirt bike and sold it off in pieces. the truck ran great for months but as i guessed the previous owner put on aftermarket wirring for all his towing equipment and bam sorta ruined the wirring harness. so now the truck won't start cause when u start it u have 5seconds to get it running! otherwise the batteries die out. ya 2 diesel batteries die out in 5seconds... serious electrical fault and i can't find it. so we decided to pull the motor and trans and we said screw it, we've always wanted a v8 bug and my brother loves his big diesels. plus we have the donor vehicle that runs and drives great if not for the electrical issues that pursue it!
my brother shipped off to the army as a black hawk mechanic and he's the one "funding" the project. he signed up senior year and bought a 2003 vw gti and left for germany and he's gonna be there probably a year or two then off to the desert...
my story im his ^^ twin brother. both 19years old, been driving a 1972 baja bug since we were 15years old and 4years to highschool just keeping it running and making it a nice little cruiser. brother wrecked it 2times and we chopped it up into a baja. to say the least it's now getting fitted with a supercharger and a v8 2barrel carb and a roll cage and is turning into a little drag car. but my weekends start saturday after my last college class which ends at 9am and i make a 30mile trip out to the country were i have a little barn to work on this little project.
im not really sure as to when im going to get to work on the project and sorry i don't have any pics cause it was sooo dark when we got everything finally into the barn. but ill lay out the plans for u guys and tell me what u think
so i have a 1963 rolling bug. good pan, transaxle in it, all the fenders and glass and such, uncut dash board even the original cardboard dash box!
i got a 70's scrap bug that had been rolled over and dragged out of a forest and was gonna go to the scrap yard so i said hell ill take it off ur hands. this is gonna be my mock up car... cause honestly i want to plasma cut out the 60's dash board and the fire wall in hopes that someone can tack weld it into there car... thats the plan i dunno if it's gonna work out but i want it to be a nice clean cut so i have little body work to do as possible.
the other advantage of the scrap body is that im gonna take the body and sharpie the heater channels to the concrete floor of the barn and the outside body line. this way i have the dimensions of the body and were the bolts are. so i can transfer the numbers over and have a bolt on subframe. so yes i plan to make a v8 chassy to hold my motor and trans and differential and a custom a arm suspension for the front wheels. pretty much i want a frame to hold the floor and all the junk and just be able to bolt the body to the frame (just like the bug is originally)
the 70's bug will get a chop of the dash board and fire walls front and back (completey gut the interior to just a shell). make sure the measurments fit both the 60's and 70's body and make the frame to suite. then i will make a frame, engine and tranny craddle and mount the engine and trans to the frame. check that the body fits and all, make the front suspension and make a 4link rear suspension and install the diff (yes i know the diff is gonna be way to wide but it's a cheap build, ill get a smaller diff later. im thinking ford 9" rear chopped up for a midget car will probably be best. just gotta find one)
this should work. the 6.9l engine is just a 454 big block ford motor set up to run diesel (essentially) with a c6 auto trans... although it's a huge trans. so i know the motor and trans fit but i won't know how it really works till i pull the motor and trans out and place them inside the sharpied jig or drop the bug body ontop of the motor and trans. i think im gonna end up with like a 15"-23" drive shaft more towards the smaller end of that equation... the motor will put as far forward as i can get it (without butchering the hood up, but there is going to be a hood scoop for force induction air box) and the motor and trans will sit level with the subframe, because i want a completley flat belly to this car. it is gonna turn into a drag car eventually or just a really clean daily driver... but i want a flat belly so ill have to work around with the motor sitting high up in the frame instead of down low
the only other problem iam worried about is the lack of weight on the rear end... i know the small block guys say u can get 2people to lift the rear of ur car up and thats with ur "light weight" gas motors this is something like a 1000lb-1200lb diesel motor and a heavy c6 tranny in the middle of the car and ya it's a big heavy diesel diff but still the weight is going to really heavy forward as apposed to the light rear end. im thinking both the batteries are gonna be in the rear (there like 30lb-40lb) but that means super long 0gauge wires to carry the load to the engine and the tank is going to be over or behind the rear axle and the radiator is going to be in the rear as well. but i don't know if i want to pull out form underneath the car or from the stock vents and through the decklid to cool the radiator
i will be using the front suspension as well, but just the spindles and brakes and such and making a custom a arm suspension with a suspension box... and i dunno im kinda leaning towards a bell crank inboard suspension or maybe just a strut type suspension but im not really sure which way to go. so yes stock front suspension (but set up for a arms) and stock brake systems
so ill be using the stock vw steering wheel, quick disconnect (hopefully with a tilt, well see how financially if that possible) and the stock ford steering box (or maybe ill go away from power steering but that will be a PITA in a parking lot) and use u joints to go around the motor
pretty much just the ford truck will be a donor vehicle. pretty much everything is going to be used but the body and frame (yes i tired to get the frame so i could just cut, pinch and weld but i was told no
any input? concerns?
for the record im just mocking up the frame, cutting it all up and tack welding it with my little mig welder i will be doing no welding myself because a frame is a bit important for my safety, as well as all the suspension pieces and the roll cage so that will all be done by a professional.
and yes i do have all the tools necessary to do this, i have access to autocad at school and i will stress analyse the frame for twisting forces as well as impact of another vehicle or wall (more the likely gonna hit a wall with this project )
honestly my brother and i want it done by the next vw texas classic... which is like a 1 1/2 years away. i don't think it'll be done by then but im gonna do my best. my school and work schedule for the next few months has worked out in my favor giving me from sat after 9am (plus the drive to the barn.... so like 10am, get to work by 11am after setting up my food and such) till at least tuesday morning or tuesday afternoon when my first class starts a 5:30pm so i should have a solid 2 1/2 days of work if i can keep up a good schedule
not sure how the money is going to work out since we are still building up the vw baja/drag build but not much more money "should" be spent on it till were ready for a new suspension swap to a 944 setup...
sorry for the long lengthy post. but i figured u guys would want a nice detailed post. just really sorry i don't have pics. i have friday off so maybe i can make a trip up to the barn grap some shots, sketch up the body dimensions and get to work on the frame design. then when i get the motor pulled out i can work on engine craddle with mounts and a trans mounts as well and how to re-enforce the frame from twisting forces and such
