Update... Also, I was able to find the factory stamped suffix codes on the front passenger pad of the block. Anyone know what these numbers mean?

Matt, I'm relying on my tired old memory, but the 283 ended in 1967 and all Chevrolet cars built after 1969 had three engine letter codes and the first letter was always " C "; all cars'64 to '69 had two letters and before had one; I think! The 307 had the same bore as the 283 and would have three letters, again, the first would be a " C "...... Maybe it's a truck block? Does it have a spin on oil filter or a canister type? CMD

Hey CMD,
It has a spin on type filter. I could have mistaken the C for an O. Sounds like your memory is about right though.

I had a 2V 307 in a 70 El Camino back in the early 90's, I raced a 69 Nova with a supped up 350, headers, big carb and cam...I smoked his but with my bone stock 307...his buddies were laughing their heads off when we met at a 7-11...that 307 was a strong winding motor.

Sound like it was a cool car. What did the guy have done to his Nova? It might have been slow for many reasons even though it was supped up. You add a big cam and carb to a motor with stock 8.5:1 CR and you'll turn it into a real dog. The cam would make it sound cool, but you'll just be leaking off too much of the compression to really gain any advantage. ;D

I thought I was done with welding on my frame, but I decided to do one more thing. I welded 3/16" gussets under the plates I welding on the car chassis so I could remove the body and roll cage as one piece. I'll post pics when I get the chance. I've been under the weather lately and haven't had the chance to do much.

The cam would make it sound cool, but you'll just be leaking off too much of the compression to really gain any advantage. ;D From what I could see, it was run'n hooker headers, 750 Holley, cam loped like a crazy horse, TH350 trans with a shift kit, tons of chrome and a HEI dizzy...after we ran a couple of blocks, we came up to a stop light and the guy told me that he wanted to see what was under the hood, he was a little pissed cuz his buddies were laugh'n in the back...I didn't want to race the kid cuz I had just baught the truck a couple weeks ago and it was a bone stock cream puff El Camino...it only had 79K on it...so needless to say after he kept tempting me I agreed to a race, it was like 12:30 at night, empty streets...I pulled the gear selector down to low and hammered the gas and pushed it 'till I felt it top out, then shifted into the 2 gear, now by the end of second gear I was already 1.5 car lengths ahead, shifted into 3 and was hitting close to 90 when we had to stop cuz of the light...I ended up braking a motor mount that night but I didn't care cuz it was for a purpose...after that, I realized the potential the truck had and the next week installed some headers right in the parking lot at Chief auto parts in San Diego CA....I don't street race anymore cuz it is too dangerous...thanks for the inquiry...Oh yah, so we met at the 7-11 and the guy did not believe what he saw under my hood...he was seriously MAD!...I personally don't think the guy knew how to drive

Could be that the engine was over cammed giving the opposite effect. Could be that he couldn't drive for crap.

I managed to squeeze some time in to work on the bug this weekend. I pulled the frame out from under the car and swept up the messy floor. I then put down my first coat of MasterSeries silver using a brush. It went on pretty easily with minimal surface prep. I knocked off most of the loose rust with a wire brush. It turned out pretty nice. Here's a link to the Master Series paint site. www.masterseriesct.com/Inexpensive and good stuff.

Cool man. You might want to consider using some of the Master Series. I posted a link in my previous post. It's $25 a quart and people have put down 2 coats (recommended) on their bug pans and still had 1/4 of a quart left over. Their chassis block is glossy so it'll come out looking nice. You can paint right over rust and wont peel in the sun like POR-15. It's just as durable as bed liner.
