Had a chance to upgrade the springs on my vortec heads last night. Removed the inner dampers (too much seat pressure). The stock spring (right) compared to the beefy upgrade spring (left) which are Lunati. Good ole spring compressor. Compress, remove keepers, decompress, remove retainer, spring, install need spring, the retainer, compress, install keepers with even spacers between gaps, and decompress. Heads ready to rock at high rpm!

At the time I bought them they were 289.99 a piece. So about $600. They went up a little, but they're still right at $600 a pair. Great street heads and out flow any production head GM made. You can easily make 400 hp with these heads. Now I just have to wait for the machine shop to be finished and the rest will come together. Can't wait.

Thanks. I'm having a little trouble separating the caps from the resized rods because the ARP rod bolts hold the caps on good and tight and because of the resizing of the big end. I got a couple suggestions from a few people and I'm going to give it a try. Hopefully I'll get them off without having to take them back to the machine shop.

Just take a small mallet with a soft face on it and give them a good rap on the end of the bolts. They will pop right off. I would hold the rod cap in my hand with the other end of the rod and piston over the work bench or box so it won't fall on the floor and gave them a good tap and they would come lose. A plastic of brass mallet works fine.

Hey Paul thanks for the tip. I did finally manage to get the caps off using a brass hammer, but I tapped them firmly in the bottom of the cap inside. Hopefully I didn't knock any of them out of round? I've run into other problems. The #3 & #4 pistons wont sit down on their journals. Not enough clearance width wise. That and all the rods have less than .001 clearance. I didn't even bother having them check clearance for me cause I figure the crank would be good to go as is. Wrong. So I have to take the crank to be ground .010 and they'll set the bearing clearance to what I want. Also which means I have to buy some more bearings and hopefully I didn't screw the big rod ends on some of the cause they didn't want to come off for anything. I had to give some of them a good bang to get them off.
If it's not one thing it's another.

Oh, not to mention I lost hold of a piston and it hit the ground. Now it doesn't want to go into it's bore as smoothly as it did before. So I had to order a new piston as well.

Just a quick update.
I just took the crank and rods by the machine shop. The rod journals are a tad on the big side and he's going to check to make sure I didn't knock the rods out of round using a brass hammer to remove the caps. Also, I dropped one of my pistons, I know, I'm on a roll, and I have a replacement piston on it's way from summit as well as .010 over rod bearings. And if you guessed it, yup, I'm having the crank turned .010 on the rods so I can get the proper clearance.
Hopefully I didn't ruin the rods and they'll only need a little resizing to make them true again. If not, it'll set me back a couple of few months. Oh well, lesson learned.
