That's great news Paul! It's a great feeling paying off debt knowing your money stays in your pocket. Can't wait to see you build start back up.
You still should stop by some time, and I by your place, to check out the project in person. I was thinking about that today as I was in Copperfield today visiting the in-laws.

Got a few more things done off the list. Made and tacked in some plates to cover the hole where the driveshaft runs through the firewall. I had to do it this way cause the driveshaft and column are all one welded up piece. A little seam sealer and paint and it should look decent. You can also see I filled in the holes where the gas pedal was. I'm moving it over away from the brake pedal to give me more room. It'll be closer to the trans hump, but at least it wont be an inch away from the brake pedal. Finished off the flooring on the passenger side. This is where the trans hump comes up into the floor giving the exhaust room to tuck within the chassis. Last, but not least, I finished the tin work for the radiator / shroud. Just needs seem sealer. I'll still make a shroud for the fan itself, but that'll come in the finishing stages. All's left to do is make the back floor that goes above the tank, weld in some front clip supports out of some metal rod, trim some more out of the engine bay to clean the look up, and make a battery box. Then it'll be ready for the body work stages. High five!

Not a problem. Hey Matt. Have you noticed that there is not a whole lot of "action" on this site?

Not a problem. Hey Matt. Have you noticed that there is not a whole lot of "action" on this site? Haha, yeah. ;D It's OK though. There's not a whole lot of V8 VW owners. Even still, there could be more "action". Oh, well. It is what it is.

Hey Matt, How do you like the shifter you got? Its Mega shifter right? I might have to replace mine .

I love it. It has a ratchet mode for 1-2-3 shifts, reverse lockout, park lockout to keep it from coming out of park or going in to park while driving, probably all standard stuff... The one I have is called the "StarShifter". It's really the same exact thing as the "MegaShifter". The difference is the MegaShifter has a nice inset gear indicator beneath either plastic or glass. The StarShifter just has a cheesy plastic indicator above the chrome plate and you have a "chrome" sticker for gear indication. Looks like the Mega shifter has a little bit of a bulkier lever too. In short, the Mega shifter is a little nicer, but very similar. Here's the StarShifter, which is what I have. Here's the MegaShifter.

Yeah, the Megashift is nice, might be what I get if I can't get mine to work right. I think the one I have now is a proshifter but it's wornout and the spring doesn't work right so it locks out about half the time. It was a freebie from another racer freind, probably why it was free.

Well, I got a little bit done this weekend. I didn't have much time work on the bug this whole week or weekend because I was busy with yard work and preparing for my birthday party this past saturday. Had to get the house looking good some people could see the new home. That and spring is here so during the winter the yard didn't get much attention. Now that I got that out of the way, I got some tuning and a little bit of driving in this weekend. I was very happy I could get my hei distributor cap off without have to remove the engine or cut sheet metal away. I basically limited the mechanical advance and vacuum advance on my dist. I now have the dist set at about 25-26º initial timing, that total mechanical advance is at about 33-34º total, and total advance with vacuum is right at about 48-49º. The engine runs strong, the throttle response is VERY touchy, and it fire's up from a cold start without ANY hesitation. I'll post pics of the mods when I get my hands on the camera. Having had a b-day bbq party this weekend, all the guys wanted to hear and see this thing run having heard about me working on it for about 2 years now and having never seen it in person. So I fired it up a few times and drove it around the colasac. One person was brave enough to ride in the passenger side and wanted me to punch it. The same guy whom filmed me. Haha. We took it around the block and I punched it for the first time, kinda. It got up to a whopping 3,500-4,000 which was plenty to make the bug really scoot. That was fun. After that everyone wanted a ride. I said heck no and had to park the thing. Can't go blazin' around the neighborhood pissing people off! ;D This weekend I'm thinking about taking the car to the back of the neighborhood, where no homes are built, it's safe (roads closed), and just driving it within the 2,500-3,5000 range to help brake the engine in and to seal up the piston rings. I need to put this thing under some load to achieve that. I have yet to get this thing past 2nd gear, so it would be nice to know it'll shift to third without any problems.

That's one of the reasons I have'nt put in another seat, I don't want to be the local amusement ride. Sure seems to me that you have a lot of total advance, Maybe cause yurs is a stroker? I don't think mine is that high but I didn't build a stroker. What's yur idle RPM?

Haha, he actually rode on top of the battery which is where the passenger seat goes. We just put a comforter over the bat. No passenger seat yet, but people still want to ride. 24-26º for the initial timing was recommended for the cam I have and because it's installed 4º adv. 32º-34º total mech. adv (vacuum disconnected) is quite common for vortec heads which actually isn't that much. Around total 38º is the norm from my understanding. With the total mech+ vacuum advance it stops at about 48º total. I just followed a 350 build an engine builder did that dynoed 410 hp, but with a stroker crank. With the given parts (heads and cam), those were the specs he got the max performance out of the 350. I'd love to take my 383 and put it on a chassis dyno to dial my build in, but all I can do until I either get it to the track or on a dyno is use those numbers as a guide. Seems to be really snappy and doesn't bog or hesitate at all as it is. He must know what he's talking about... What are the timing specs yours is set at?

Oh, depending on how well it's warmed up, the idle RPM is right at about 1,000-1,100 PRM. Once in gear, it's at about 600-700. It needs a little more RPM idle cause the cam.

That's one of the things I'm working out cause I don't have any clue as to the cam spec. I've timed it with the light at 8 Deg BTC and let the MSD box do the rest. I've been trying to get the cam card for about three years but the guy who built the bottm end can't find the file. That's about where mine idles, 1000.

Those MSD boxes are nice. You might be able to get the cam part number by pulling the timing cover and gear. I know the number was stamped on mine on the front of the cam / just behind the cam gear. That's a lot of work though for something that might not be there on all cams. I'm not sure if all cam grinders stamp the part numbers on their cams.
