Well it turns out on the S-10 frames that are boxed, like mine, you can't just grind the welds and pull the sections apart. So the weld will turn out more like this. I'll then run fish plates probably on the outer sides, the top and bottom.

It's cool, I can kinda make out what you're talking about from the pic of the weld.
So I got the frame partially welded up this weekend. Most of the time spent was prepping the joining ends. I'll post pics of the frame clamped. I'll post pics of the finished weld when I get there this week or weekend. I also bought some 1/8" metal in 2" 3" size to use for the fish plating.

Here are a couple of pics of the prepped frame ends and a picture of the frame clamped together before I tacked it, then started welding. I'll have pics of the finished welding / fish plating later this week.

I'm doing mine in a single garage I'm renting at my apartment complex, lol! My space is very limited and once I'm done with the project I'm gonna have fun cleaning the garage up. If anything I wish I had more space, but it's nice being able to walk down to the garage anytime and work on it.

it would be a very good idea to "fish-plate" those cuts.because that's going to be the weak spot in the frame and if you put any kind of HP under the hood, that's where it will break,if it does...remember Murphy's Law...if anything can go wrong,it will, and at the worst possible time!.. ;D.. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murphy's_Law...

Story of my life! j/p It'll be much stronger than just a straight butt joint the way I've joined it, but I agree, fish plates will be the way to go for the added strength. The weld area tends to be stronger. If you weld something together right and try to break it, the meal breaks around the weld.

I've got the frame completely welded up and I have started fish plating the top of the frame. I've got a couple spots that have a little slag inclusion I need to fix before adding the reinforcement plates.

yes i believe a 1 inch weld is equivilent to 3/8 inch bolt in strength.

I'm definitely putting down plenty of weld just to be sure it holds.
