I found this on another forum and thought I'd share. Just goes to show another way to build a V8 bug, volksrods style. The thing I like about this build is the approach of the build is very simple. This build is still going on. Enjoy! "The rod is being built for the Grassroots Motorsports Magazine: $2008 Challenge wherein you have to buy and build a racecar for less than $2008 and compete in an autocross, drag race, and concours judging." www.grassrootsmotorsports.com"The Nelsons got a late start on this project and have 51 days to go from a shell and a pile of parts to a full on V8 volksrod. Check out their progress. The event is Oct 3 - 4 so they have 21 days to complete:" cam777.synthasite.com/

That's cool, but I got more than that in my motor!! It would be neat to do that maybe for next year. I still don't see how their gonna do that for $2008, it looks like they've got more than that in their engine too. $1000 heads,$200 valve covers,$200 intake, plus tires, trans, other parts, unless you go to the junkyard maybe they should call it the $2008 junkyard wars. it's still a cool idea, not real practical cause of the price of steel, and the rules were kinda vague on things like what i mentioned. Maybe i read it wrong or missunderstood it. I hate rules!!

True, their motor looks like $2000 easily. It did come out of another car they had, a datsun. I could see how the front clip, body, wheels, rear, and a junkyard tranny and engine could be right at $2000.
I still enjoyed looking at the build because of how quickly it's coming together and how they used very obtainable parts.

I was just noticing the engine in that black bug had an electric water pump on it and that reminded me about what I noticed the other day in a junk yard I was at...I was checking out a last generation Caprice('91 through '96) looking for a radiator for our race car and noticed that from the factory,it came with an electric water pump..for in keeping with the Low-Buck theme of this thread, I thought I'd post this for anybody who's looking at an electric pump without a whole lot of pesos.. have no idea what they would be going for at the local parts store, but you should be able to find one really cheap at the local wrecking yard..

The water pump on the caprice that your talking about is cam driven like the LT1. the engine in the cars are know as baby lt1's. It should be a 4.3L v8. This water pump will not work on the normal small block chevy because the engine has the same reverse water flow as the LT1.

There is 126 pages of documentation on the $1,982.06 build costs, and the car ran 10.599 @ 124.35 mph at Mason-Dixon last week.

That's a very impressive time! Excellent build! Well done and I like how the whole family got involved. I wish could get everyone envoled in mine. My older bro and Dad used to run dirt track, and no help from them cause they have their own Hotrod projects going on. ;D

Part owner. It is my family's project. It started as a father-son project and quickly became a family project. We started with 95 days to go until the Grassroots Motorsports Challenge. If you are in Flotida Oct 4-6, it is worth going to spectate. Spectators get in free.

Sounds like fun. I wish Florida was closer by. What are the specs on the engine? How much did the roll cage cost and did you guys bend / fabricate the cage too?
