Ok, after all the homework that I have done on this project for the last two years, I finally began work on my own v8 bug last March. I pretty much studied how (v8 super beetle) did his project and copied most of it with a few exceptions of course. So thank you (vsb) for all your detailed descriptions and pictures because they really helped.
I bought the bug about 6 years ago for $200 with many plans for it, but still needed a motor. After purchasing a few parts cars and getting most of the parts I needed, I installed it all including a stock 1500cc motor that one of them had. It knocked loud after installing it and tuning it up. So after much deliberation, and finding vsb's post, I decided to look for the parts needed to do the s-10/vw build.
I found an 89 s-10 in a junk yard for $200 and took the frame and other parts needed then sold the body and bed back for $180. Yup, only $20 in the frame. Then a buddy of mine really helped me out by selling me a decent 86 mustang that he had extra for $600. I sold the rest back for junk for $400. So only have $200 in the motor and tranny. Going good!!!
I decided to go with the 302 after reading how vsb had problems with getting his distributor off because of the cowl from the bug. The 302 has the dist. in the front so only made sense. Plus I love mustangs and have owned many. I don't have much money in this build as you probably will see cause it is still rough, but a whole lot of time. Myself and my 60 year old dad have been working on it for over a year now and its looking like it might be at least that many more.
This is the picture of the donor mustang and the motor on the frame.
