not as of yet.(other than stealing peoples already uploaded images) ive been eyeballing some cameras, but havent managed to let go the money. i got the motor plates today. aluminum plates for the front and the rear, and the tabs that go with them. while i was there i also ordered the linkages for the shifter that i picked up sometime back.(hurst vgate inline shifter) looks like this one on ebay they should show up in about a week. i am hoping to have the rearend measured by the end of this week.

Cool! Having the motor plates will allow you to place the engine where you want it.

Cool! Having the motor plates will allow you to place the engine where you want it. AND itll give that cool shake to car when it idles, just like one of those big stupid dogs that shakes its whole body when it wags its tail. and it is one of those parts that you buy it once, and youre done with it. looking at how nice and simple it is....... i shoulda gotten them sooner for some of the other unsafe crap ive welded into engine bays. nothing ever ACTUALLY fell out....... ...........on the road............ while driving................... depressingly enough, the shop that i ordered my shifter installation kit at, said that it had been discontinued....... so back to the bailing wire i guess. ill just have to see if they happen to carry the linkages, i have an old kit from one, but its missing a linkage and a couple of jamnuts and a pivot, nothing major, but aggravating enough to get your hands on. and i am GOING to use this shifter, if it kills someone.

Could you make the needed parts?

yeah i can make one, out of a piece of bar and allthread. its just the hassle of getting it to fit correctly(bushings), and getting the slop out of it afterwards. when it comes to the shifter i can honestly say that i am lazy..... i want it to work, correctly, the first time, everytime.
i had one in a truck, that i had gotten from a guy, and it was a factory unit that had been cobbled together, it seemed like there was ALWAYS a linkage or pivot either binding up, or trying to fall out on the ground. lets just say i want to save myself THAT aggravation this go around.

i realy like that shifter lol, and i like what u said about using the shifter, "i am GOING to use this shifter, if it kills someone." there have been a few parts like that, the solid roller cam(HAD TO use one), the crank( that was after my friend told me it was going to be a $275 paperweight.... ..like hell it is) the oversize wheels. the ancient stock vette heads(they had been sitting outside for 10 years)........it basically ends up including the whole build list ;D .

yeah i can take criticism. but i take advice a whole lot better when its something i want to hear, like "its gonna work"
i finally got to measuring the length of the housing that i am going to need. used the winch truck, lifted the back of the bug, cut out the rear wheel wells, and stuffed the tires into the fenders so that they will clear at full tuck. (they are about 13 or 14 inces wide) and measured from the distance between the mounting pads on the rims. come out to 41 inches.
sitting there full tuck.........looked MEAN. i had that same stupid permagrin ;D for a while ;D

Awesome! So how much is the rear end being shortened?

if im not mistaken i think that the truck 9 inch rear ends are about 60 inches and car rearends are around 55 inches end to end, so thats going to be about a good 15-20 inches, depending on whether i use the truck rearend thats setting, or another one thats at a guys shop out back. there are slight differences in the caps housing ends between car and truck where the bearings go, and the ones out of the cars are slightly easier to buy parts for.(the ends) so i think that i might go with the one out of a car.

r u wanting to narrow the rear end?
|
|
|
Post by lookatme on Jul 1, 2008 22:42:57 GMT -5
yes, i am GOING ;;D to be narrowing the standard size ford 9 inch rear end to fit with my wide tires underneath the bug between the fenders. cutting out a total of around 15 inches.
UPDATE: not VERY bug related. was cleaning out a place,(helping the guy who hauls metal) second job, and i found one of those CLASSIC add-on swamp coolers from the late 40s (ancient AC technology). its still in pretty good shape but has some decent sized rust holes. it is ALL there though, so i might try and use it as a template to make one out of nonferrous metal. ill see if i can find a pic to update with.
