Hiya guys,
Just a couple of quick questions if anyone can help me with them.
Any idea what weight/strength coilovers I should start with for the Mustang II front end and the 4 link setup on the back ?
The bug is likely to be running an SBC 383.
Any suggestions appreciated.
Cheers,
Si

do you have a summit catalog? in the suspention section there's a chart that could answer your questions. I think you have to weigh the front and the rear of the car seperatly to find out what coils you need.

Cheers for that, Not got a catalog here. Will have a look on the site see if they've got it up on there. Only problem is at the mo the car is just a frame, no body or engine etc. so i've got nothing to weigh Was wondering what choices others had taken. Shouldn't be that much difference between the majority of the bugs that have been built so far.

right, badblown, or hellraiser should be more apt to answer that as they've built one similar to yours. Maybe i'll bring some new catalogs when i come over , the only thing is they're only good for about a month or so. Fuel increases and product price increases they change all the time.

for starters, depending on what engine and trans u use, ur lookin at arround 600-700 lbs. then u figure the body weighs about 250lbs. but the front suspention will only be holding roughly half the body weight so 125 lbs. plus arround half the weight of ur frame, then add 100 lbs. for the odds and ends. so ur lookin at arround 900-1000 lbs and remember not to factor in anything that is unsprung weight. hope that gives u an idea

Ive got 450 Pound Mustang II v8 springs in my front end of my car and I had to cut 1 whole coil off of them to get the ride height I wanted.
hey hellraiser you say your car weighs 1400 Pounds. Is that Complete or just a bare chassis with motor trans and body? Cause a STOCK VW weighs 1700 Pounds, I dont see how your vw could weigh any less then that, if anything It should weigh couple hundred pounds more not less. Im gonna try and get my car weighed this weekend, im guess it weighs approx 2300-2400.

That would be helpful if you got your bug weighed since tube builds are lighter. I would think the S10 setup would weight more than that, but yours isn't complete so that might be close. I'm thinking when mine is finished is should weigh in at about 2500-2750 lbs, but I'm also going to carpet the car, build a trunk, and weld some sheet metal to clean up the engine bay appearance.
I believe professor or his son Matt's car, the stock looking white blown bug, weighs 2750 lbs and he used a malibu (G-body) frame. Still, even at 2750 lb. max weight the car should fly with a mild to high performance V8.

Well my car is fully carpeted and interior is fully done except seat covers, then only thing I have left to do is make a few little panels in the engine bay and one in the trunk, so my car is 99 percent done and what I have to do to the car is only gonna add 10-20 pounds max. Definately the tube chassis is lighter and stronger then a S-10 chassis or Mailbu chassis. the thing that will make my car weigh so much is all the cage i got in the car.

I would think that the S10 chassis, well at least the one I have cause not all years are boxed, would be stronger than a tube build cause the size of the factory tubing is 2"x6"x.1875" and it's boxed all the way till the kick up (one beam fits into the other). [] Which is why it's heavier. They're made to tow heavy payload. Though I haven't built any tube chassis and you know your stuff, that's just how I figure a S10 chassis is stronger.

I got my Mustang II front suspension kit from Speedway and they recommended 500 lb spings.
Hope this helps.

That seems like a lot! Rear S10 truck springs are 180 lbs and they're made to haul heavy payload.
