Tell you what, Iv'e got an extra 350 at home that I dont plan on using for anything. It's never been run after the rebuild. It's bored .030 over with a 447 lift cam, but it's only a two bolt main and the heads are off H.O. 305 Monte Carlo. Compression is like 10:1. Everything in the motor is new except the crank, it just got a regrind. Line bored and fully balanced, makes right at 400 Hp. I have everything but the intake, carb and exhaust. Balancer, flywheel, starter, water pump, distributer, plugs, wires, pulleys, fuel pump( but no pushrod) and even a stand. I also know where there is a short wheel base S-10 for sale here thats not on craigslist. How much were you wanting for it??? id be really interested in that!

Um, free...? Sorry dude , I'm nice but not that nice. I've got three grand in this setup, but I'll cut that in half If youre serious. I'm in Boston for the rest of the week and I'll be home this weekend, We can get together some time next week if you want to get some more details about it. I've got all the paperwork on the build. and I'll shoot some pics of the pistons just to show you its only .030 over. The heads arent bolted on yet and that's a peice of cake.

LOL, I hope you knew I was joking, Matt. Heck, $1500 is pretty close to free. Take your time to save up or buy a piece at a time. That's what I did. Eventually, when I had everything, I put the engine together. Even if you don't have the money to rebuild whatever engine you buy, you'll need it to mock the car up. From the frame, to the flooring, and firewall.

this may be a dumb question but the 305 block is the same size as the 350 block right? like the dimensions are the same?

All small blocks, to my knowledge, are the same outer physical size and appearance. What makes them different is their bore and stroke size.
You can actually take the 5.7 rods and crankshaft and put them into a 350, but you have to have the 350 size pistons, which are 4".

I think the crank bearing journals are smaller in a 305. not 100% possitive. Yes the blocks are the same as far as dimentions goes , the guts are different. I built a 305 first when I started this project in 2005, it sounded good but no REAL power. Go with a 350, youre gonna spend the same amount of $ might as well get the biggest bang for your buck.

The 305 and the 350 take the same 5.7 rod. They are the same journals as well. The 400 differs in that it has a smaller rod. I would go to the junkyard and get a mock up block as long as its small block you will be fine. I wouldnt give much for it...especially if its a 305! See if you can borrow the 305 for a while?

I wish mortec.com was working right now. It has a list of every SBC casting and it'll tell you what casting / block came with what size journal crankshaft. The 305 crank and rods will swap directly into a 350. There may have been some small journal 305s. I do know the small cube SBCs like the 265 and 283 had small journal cranks that were forged, but they soon went to medium journal size cranks so they could make them out of cast. You can build up a 305. BUT, you would get more ponies out of the 350 with the same parts, obviously. Check this out. How does 372 hp out of a 305 sound? www.popularhotrodding.com/enginemasters/articles/chevrolet/0667_phrs_305_chevy_engine_blocks/index.html

im DEFIANTLY going to go with the 350. if im going to go though all the problem of building one it may has well be a 350 there just as cheep and the parts are plentiful. I just wanted to know just for getting some rough measurements. and ive seen a few blocks around for 100 bucks so ill just end up getting one of those and building it. Im still having trouble finding an s10 frame around here tho. im going home this weekend so ill see if i can find anything up there.

meh mortec is ok....
I would agree with the 350 and BEFORE you buy it look into what kind of power goals you have in mind. The difference of two bolt and four bolt will play huge in this decision. Any offers on the pan yet?
