Thanks for the advice Paul. That's what I was thinking, just get each individual component (pistons, pins, rods) within 2-4 grams and it should be fine. Being that I'm going up to a 383 I'll be counting on torque to get the car really moving when I feel like toying with people. I'm wanting this to be a semi daily driver when the weathers fair so I can keep from putting too many miles on my truck. So I have to agree. I don't think it's necessary but would be nice. On the other hand. Eagle and Scat will balance their cranks to whatever bob weight you ask them to for a fee. Figuring out the weight wouldn't be to hard cause we have a scale at work. The cranks come balanced at a set bob weight already and if I'm pretty close to that weight I wont worry about it. The only thing I don't want is an engine that shimmies. I recognize that name when I was search google for a machine shop. My brother swears by Gary & Son's. At minimum I'm going to get the block hot tanked.

Remember to add the weight of the rod bearing halves.

Thanks! I was going to do that and add the piston rings to the pistons. I'll put together some organize tray to keep each weighed part with the # piston I balanced it to. If that makes since.

Well, some good news. I ordered an Eagle Specialty Products internal balance stroker crankshaft for my 350. store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=ESP-10350375057IAnd I bought some (383) Speed Pro dish pistons. store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=STL-H859CP30Both parts will work well with my stock 5.7" rods. So I'll save some $$$ there. Coolest part is I did some shopping around and found the crank for $231 here... www.horsepowerparts.com/index.php?content_id=175&product_id=21684and a set of 8 pistons here... www.kmjent.com/cart/product.php?productid=324&cat=20164519&bestseller=Y...I called summit up and said, "I'd like to buy these parts (I listed stock #s and he gave me the pricing) but I found them cheaper here (I then gave him the website URLs)". They beat their competitors prices by $1 for each product. Summit has a beat-a-price guarantee so I thought I'd see if it was baloney. It wasn't. I got the parts for $407 with shipping. At Summit's pricing it would've been $522 total with shipping. So I saved over $100 smackers. So I have all my parts, or they're being shipped, and the motor can go together soon. That is after hot tanking, decking, and balancing. I might not have the assembly balanced if the bob weight of my pistons, pins, rings, bearings, cap screws and rods are fairly close to the neutral bob weight of 1825 +/- 2% from Eagle. Maybe balancing will be cheap enough if I give the machine shop the bob weight and they only have to balance the crank? We'll see...

Good deal! Sounds like you've got a very good grasp of the balancing process! Are you going to have the rods re-sized or are they in good shape?

ALL OF THEM. crank, pistions, rods, wristpins, rings, bearings, balancer, flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, pulleys bolts, and have them balance it correctly. all of them. it costs a little bit of money, but is worth it. some of the best money you can spend on an engine. do it right the first time.

I agree. I'd like to get this engine together before my house is finished being built, but I don't think that is going to happen. I had a meeting with the home build and he said it'll be done around Aug 7th if the weather holds up. It sure would make hauling easier. I'm going to go ahead and bite the bullet and take everything to the machine shop and have them do what's absolutely necessary. I got pricing from a local machine shop. I'm going to reduce some of the cost by complete stripping down the block (cam bearings, plugs, etc.) and assemble it myself, and I'm going to hone the bores as well to help reduce some of the costs. Here's some of the pricing I got. $75 Hot tank bare block $120 Decking $250-275 Balancing Rotating Assem. I didn't bother to get pricing for the rods resizing / reconditioning. I'll have them see what shape they're in. As much as I'd like to put the engine together right away I'm going to go ahead and wait til I get the money for machine shop costs. I'm probably looking at around $500 but it'll be worth it in the long run. I'll go ahead and start working on the radiator mount which wont cost me anything. Word of advise...woman + wedding, new home, and car project = a car project that'll take a while to build. LOL! I couldn't imagine throwing kids into the equation. ;D

I've changed my mind slightly on the paint color scheme I want to go with. I love the black and charcol silver combination but I'm wanting something with some color. Here we go. Jet Black and Kandy Orange with a Gold base coat. I'm pretty set on this color scheme. I think it'll look very racy.

do yourself a favor on paint schemes. buy some hot wheels car bugs, and paint them up in very similar schemes and colors to what you want, and then put in a spot where you see it ALL the time. thataway you can get bored with it before you have it on the car.

Received my new pistons and crankshaft for the 383 build. I have to send the crank back though cause there's a scratch on the one of the rod journals from shipping. It's from one of the shipping staples poking up into the box. You would think it's from the box the luxury treatment. LOL, look at that box. Oh well... Match set is always good. Made in India, that's good too right? LOL... This is exactly how I received it...great job UPS and FedEx!!! It looked OK. There was a little rust on of of the bob weights, but then I found an unacceptable scratch...back it goes. A plastic bag of this weight really shouldn't have tears in it like it does. Wouldn't you think?

What a bummer!!! I sure hope they treat you right with the damage...
They could have packaged it a little tougher!!
I had some of the same poor packing experience with my Gear Vendors Overdrive... It looked like it had been dropped during shipping. It leaked oil out but I could not find any actual damage... I guess I will see when I try it out eventually...
You'd think you wouldn't have to deal with this kind of stuff when you pay good money for their products...
