Here is my notchback project. I have the body off the pan and looking to sell the engine, pan, etc...it's in the way. As soon as I can get rid of that stuff, I can start building my frame table. I am looking for a 9" or Dana rearend to narrow, and also planning on purchasing the front and rear tires, rims and suspension componants. I really can't do a whole lot with the frame until I get those things purchased. (Looks like I'll be taking a second job through Christmas!) I have gotten some good ideas and insights from Tom's Squareback project. Are there any other Type III projects I can learn from? Attachments:

My son asks me every day if we're going to work on "our" car. There's nothing better than watching your 9 year old son work on a hotrod with a power tool!

Awesome project. That's great to hear your son is getting involved. I know I could use a helper. Keep us posted on the build.

That is going to make for one crazy project! I love it. Your going to upset a lot of purists cutting up that notchback! Kinda like cutting up a '54 Beetle............Are you going to build your own chassis?

If the car had the original engine and pan, I would think twice about cutting it up, but since it doesn't, I figure I would just stay away from the VW shows. The notchback has great lines. I've always wanted a front engine beetle, but fell in love with the notch over the last few years.
I am going to build my own chassis. I am making a frame table over the next few weeks to mount the body on to. Then I need to get the rear and front suspension parts, then I can start on the frame measurements.

I agree, the notchback makes a nice Hot Rod and you won't find another V8 powered one in the same parking lot! Looking forward to seeing the construction photos. Fatman Fabrication makes a nice ans simple MII front end and can make it in just about any width.

Sounds like a great plan. Can't wait to see the progress.

I completely forgot about this place called Welders Series that sell a D-I-Y MII cross member. They have all kinds of stuff that could be real handy for someone building a chassis. www.welderseries.com/

I finally got the chassis out from under the car tonight. It's all listed on Craigslist and other free places; hopefully it will go soon. Now I can start building the frame table/jig.

Found a guy today with a racing shop about 100 miles from me. He can build me a 9" rear narrowed to my specs, with Moser 31 spline axles, iron center-pinion third member, gears of my choice, disc brakes and four link brackets for $1,700. It's not chrome but it's a helluva deal none the less. He's in Louisville, if anyone's close and would like to call him I'll give you his information. His shop does custom sub frames and all kinds of custom stuff.

I sold the vw chassis, engine and all the extra parts so my garage has room again. I made enough money to pay for the steel, etc. I will buy the steel for the frame table/jig as soon as I get the chance. I got the legs built yesterday. In the picture, the legs are upside down. The bolts are used to level the table.

Good deal. Is that rear end quote with the differential, 4-bar set-up, etc?

It includes the 9" pinion support and gears. It only includes the brackets for the four link, none of the bars. This shop has been in business for a long time, a little dad and son shop. They are in partnership with a guy does a lot of fabricating out of his small shop. I am going to go check it all out before I buy, but I talked to him at length on the phone and he seems ok. I do want to make sure it's a good deal. He's a good $500 to $900 cheaper than the big name outfits. I'll post whatever I find out.
